Week Two -- January 25 & 26, 2005

Another painful week of auditions has past, but it's also been an educational experience...

What we've learned:

*New Orleans apparently has a severe lack of talented people. Or else all the talented people were out of town that week... or afraid to join the flock...

*No matter how good your voice is, you will not get through if you audition by yodeling and/or singing "Jingle Bells."

*Chics with pink hats should be banned.

*And honestly, they should make every contestant take a drug test BEFORE they get to audition, okay?

Leroy

*Also, Kenny Loggins is nice.

Matthew Falber earns the "He Was Robbed!" trophy this week. Matthew, aka the Lion King guy, was terrific... but his performance (which forced him to switch voices, as he was singing I Just Can't Wait to Be King) seemed to make the judges' brains turn off, and they chose not to put him through. Sadness.

Here are my four favorite "made it through to Hollywood" people:

David Brown's voice should be heralded and put on numerous CDs. I am rooting for this boy all the way. And he's the only person from the New Orleans auditions who I thought was even slightly worthy. But he's beyond worthy. He's... David Brown.

Jennifer Todd started out a little shaky, but once she started belting out the chorus, she sounded amazing. She's wanted to pursue singing for a long time, but has been holding back because of insecurities about her appearance. I admire her for taking this step.

Amanda the showgirl really can sing, plus she wants it badly. I love it when people come on there and talk about wanting it because they want to sing and touch people's hearts, and aren't just all hey, look at my prettiness!

Hell yeah! We've found the Resident Hot Guy of the competition! Mario Vazquez sounds like a Backstreet Boy, but... they sold a lot of CDs, right?

I also wanted to mention Emily, who is this year's Amy Adams. She's adorable and has a really interesting voice. Traditionally, the happy, boisterous girls don't go very far on AI, so I'm not holding my breath for her, but hey, she made me smile.
