THE BRADY BUNCH IN THE WHITE HOUSE
Starring: Gary Cole, Shelley Long, Autumn Reeser, Chad Doreck
Original Airdate: 2002
Genre: Comedy (or at least it tries)
The Brady Bunch In The White House is a TV-movie based on two movies that were based on a TV series from thirty-some-odd years ago. The Brady parentals, Mike and Carol, are played by Shelley Long and Gary Cole, who also played those roles in the films. The kids and Alice have all been recast. I think the movie has the same writers, though. A group of 11-year-olds.
White House begins by showing crossing guard Bobby Brady rescuing a cat from a warehouse and coming across a lonely lottery ticket. When the winning lottery numbers are announced, the Bradys learn the ticket is a winner. Thus begins a string of fortunate and ridiculous events.
Mike and Carol, the ever-virtuous, don't feel right about keeping the 67 million dollars they've just won, because technically the ticket wasn't theirs. First they try to track down the owner of the ticket. When that fails, they donate the money to a charity that helps homeless architects. The President of the United States personally thanks them for their generosity.
Meanwhile, said President is about to run again, and he needs a running mate. He sees how honest and generous Mike Brady is. Someone suggests Mike be the Vice Presidential candidate. The President's all "Why not?" A few months later, they've won the election. Then, because of a scandal, the President resigns. Now Mike Brady is President. The Bradys all move into the White House.
As in the other Brady Bunch movies, a large portion of the movie is spent reminding us how out of touch the Bradys are with reality. They're so honest and pure and good, they are an enigma to most.
So Mike's President and he needs a Vice President. He decides to appoint... Carol Brady!
Now Carol's Vice President, and she keeps order by giving time outs to grown men.
I, the viewer, start to hate the Bradys.
They are not funny in this movie.
They are a terrible First Family.
Well, at least Greg's kind of cute.
Who is that actor, anyway?
I imdb him.
And that's when I realize...
It's Chad, from Grease: You're The One That I Want!!
Is Chad your Danny? If so, call 1-888-IVote-Chad now!
Meanwhile, back at the White House, two villainous individuals are trying to get Mike and Carol thrown out of office. First they try to uncover a Brady scandal, but the Bradys are so perfect, there is none to be found. When all else fails, they lock the Bradys in an underground bunker and try to usurp them while they're trapped down there. Buuut they escape, and there's a happy ending for all.
While White House makes references to both the series and the other feature films, I'm not sure where or how it really fits in. In The Brady Bunch Movie, Peter's voice changed and the voices in Jan's head were transferred to Cindy. In White House, Peter's a squeaker and Jan still hears voices. Maybe I should have watched A Very Brady Sequel. Maybe that explained it. Like perhaps when the Bradys went to Hawaii they all went through a time rip.
Okay, sure, that works.
In conclusion, I'd like to send a very important message to the people who keep producing Brady movies:
STOP.
