DAVID COPPERFIELD
Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Ciarán McMenamin, Bob Hoskins, Maggie Smith
Original Airdate: 1999
Type: Drama
This Masterpiece Theater Production follows the life of David Copperfield from the time he's a baby til he grows into Harry Potter til he grows up and gets really attractive. Along the way, he meets many interesting characters -- some mean (his evil stepfather and his wacked-out sister), some doofy (Dora, the twit he fancies), and some downright creepy (Uriah, a killer shrew of a man).
David, despite all his hardships growing up, is very innocent and sweet, and is often shocked by the evil and greed he sees in those around him. He trusts people too easily... and often pays for it. Along the way, he becomes smarter, but still remains pretty innocent. He's a creative, passionate little bugger, always writing stories, always obsessing over his mistakes.
Meanwhile, nearly everyone he comes in contact with... dies. Evidently it does not pay to be acquaintances with David Copperfield.
And then there's Agnes, the girl David grows up with and loves like a sister... but we all know where those relationships can end up. Mmmhmm. They want each other. And after David's goofy little wife goes to that big haven in the sky, Agnes makes her move.
I love Agnes. She's so scared to tell David she loves him. And then when he finally gets her to admit it, she cries and it's beautiful and makes me want to hug everybody in the world.
*Happy sigh* What can I say? I just really like movies that follow people's lives over the course of many years. If you like those kinds of movies, too, or if you just have a thang for Dickens (or Daniel Radcliffe), check this one out.
