THE DAVID CASSIDY STORY
Starring: Andrew Kavovit, Malcolm McDowell
Original Airdate: 2000
Type: Biopic
Why did I tape The David Cassidy Story? For that matter, why did I tape Come On, Get Happy: The Patridge Family Story a year earlier? I don't think I've ever even seen The Partridge Family. And if I was going to pick a Cassidy brother to lust over, I'd go for Patrick or Shaun, not David. Somebody please explain this to me.
Well, it may not make much sense, but the fact remains that I taped this movie for some reason and hey, I just watched it and okay, now I'm going to discuss it. All right.
David Cassidy. Shaggy-haired teen idol, star of a 70's sitcom, rock star wannabe, actor. This is the story of his life. Well... not really his life so much as five seconds from when he's a little boy and then it cuts to the day he decides he wants to be an actor, when he's about eighteen. Then he gets the job on Partridge, becomes an overnight sensation, is constantly mobbed by scary teenage girls, and -- after a tragedy at one of his final concets -- he begins to spiral downward. All the while, he's trying to win the approval of his dad, a famous actor who never really approves of David or gives him the kind of love he wants. Annnnd then he dies. The dad, I mean. Not David.
The David Cassidy Story was exec-produced by the man himself, so I do feel kind of happy knowing that he authorized it and that this is... well... duh, his story. Even if some of the details don't match up with what we learned in Come On, Get Happy (which was from Danny Bonaducci's perspective.) What does that all mean? What are the facts? I MUST KNOW THE PARTRIDGE TRUTH!
As far as casting, they got Andrew Kavovit, who we saw in The Great Mom Swap, to play David. That boy can play 18 as well as he can play 30, and he can play David Cassidy almost freakishly... the resemblance is eerie.
David Cassidy's story is one of getting what you want, realizing it sucks, escaping, realizing that sucks, too, and then climbing out of the lowest low and finding happiness. If we can't all learn something from David Cassidy, then... well... maybe a Shaun Cassidy Story is in order. Hey, I'd watch it.
