FIFTEEN AND PREGNANT
Starring: Kirsten Dunst, Park Overall, Julia Whelan
Original Airdate: 1998
Type: Drama/Girl-In-Crisis
Fifteen and Pregnant will always hold a special place in my heart because I could have been in it. Parts of it were filmed in Oregon, and I remember seeing an ad in the paper, looking for extras. Back then, the working title was Fifteen and Pregnant: A Nice Girl's Story. I would have volunteered if I'd known Kirsten Dunst was going to be in it. I've always liked that girl.
So Dunst stars as Tina, a nice girl who smokes and drinks and sleeps with her boyfriend and gets pregnant and this is very very bad because she's only fifteen years old. For the next nine months, life kind of sucks for poor Tina. Her friends all but abandon her. Her family is angry at her. She gains weight (noooo!) and gets stretch marks. She has to attend special classes. Her boyfriend dumps her and starts dating the town skank.
Meanwhile, Tina has this friend, Lori, who was a teen mom herself. Now Lori's daughter is about two years old, and she's constantly crying and making Lori's life miserable. Lori's daughter's purpose is to remind us (and Tina) that having a baby is not all fun & good times.
Tina's family life isn't exactly wonderful at the moment. Her parents separated before she got pregnant, and her siblings want to live with the father. Everyone has problems with everybody else. But as the film progresses, things start to turn around with her family. Her parents begin mending bridges.
In the end, after doing a lot of screaming and cursing, Tina gives birth to a healthy baby boy.
Yay.
Fifteen and Pregnant is available on DVD.
