Confession time. I don't hate the Olsen twins. When I was a kid, I really liked them. Sure, they were six years younger than I was, but it didn't matter. I was a big fan of Full House, I saw It Takes Two in the theater, I watched their TV series Two of a Kind (well, for at least three episodes), and I made a point to see all their TV-movies and specials.
To Grandmother's House We Go was the Olsens' first TV-movie, though in no way their last. They made it while on hiatus from Full House during the summer they turned six. These girls couldn't act to save their lives, but a lot of folks thought they were cute. They could shake their tooshies with the best of them and say stuff like You got it, dude! I had their doll. ...Did I just admit that?
Uh, so in this movie, the girls play Julie and Sarah, little twin daughters of a single mom. The Olsens get to act like bigger brats here than they ever did on Full House, and that even includes the episode where Michelle played on Jesse's drumset even after he told her not to, and then when she got in trouble she said he was mean and then she ran away from home and later JESSE FREAKIN APOLOGIZED. Yes. It's true. Bigger brats than that.
I don't know what it is about running away, though, because in Grandmother's House they do it, they did it on FH, and they did it a year later in their next TV-movie. Some writers, somewhere, must like the idea of the Olsens making a departure or something.
So anyway, in this movie, Sarah and Julie decide to run away to their grandmother's house so they can give their mom a much-needed vacation this Christmas. Since they're not allowed to cross the street, they hop a city bus, then stow away in a delivery truck. They end up getting accidentally kidnapped by bandits who want ransom for the kids. Meanwhile, their mother is frantically looking for them. She gets help from the driver of the delivery truck, a guy who she despises.
What a Christmas this is turning out to be.
In the end, everything turns out okay. The girls get to see Grandma. The bandits/kidnappers are caught. Mommy and Delivery Truck Guy hook up. Delivery Guy wins the lottery. Bob Saget and Lori Loughlin make cameo appearances.
I swear, I'm not making this up.
Then they all live happily friggin ever -- Delivery Guy, Mom, and the world's biggest brats. Merry Christmas, indeed!
