I DO (BUT I DON'T)

Starring: Denise Richards, Dean Cain
Original Airdate: 2004
Type: Romantic Comedy

I Do (But I Don't) is a sweet, fluffy romantic comedy. It features classic misunderstandings, rides on carousels, damsel-in-distress moments, and a happy, fairy-tale ending.

If this movie didn't star Dean Cain, I'd so be throwing the DVD out the window and driving over it with my car.

I Do reminded me of those old Shirley Temple movies. You know, the ones where Shirley would unwittingly play matchmaker for two lonely souls, there'd be some wacky misunderstanding, someone would act like a dumbass, and, in the end, when the two adults finally did get together, their dialogue would be along the lines of: "How silly of me!" or "What a fool I've been!" Then they'd get married, adopt Shirley, kiss... and then we'd see a fade-to-black with a scrawly The End across the screen, while violins and trumpets played a mellow but happy tune.

Which is all fine and good if this is 1936, but in the 21st century, these plots are a little hard to swallow.

Denise Richards plays Lauren, a wedding coordinator who meets Nick (Dean Cain) at a wedding-gone-awry (he shows up in his firefighter gear, fulfilling the visual fantasies of a whole bunch of Lifetime viewers.) Lauren is all OMG HE'S HOT AND NICE and proceeds to develop a crush on Nick. But that night, she sees him at a party with the woman (Darla) who she's planning a wedding for. Lauren assumes Nick is Darla's fiance. She is sad.

Nick likes Lauren, and, as he is NOT the fiance (but Lauren doesn't know that), he starts to hit on her. Lauren's all like AUGH THIS IS BEYOND WRONG, until it finally comes out that it's Nick's BROTHER who is the fiance, and he was just hanging out with Darla at the party because hey, she's his future sister-in-law. So Nick and Lauren start to date, but then Lauren hears a rumor that somebody saw Darla with the "groom's brother," ya know -- doin' it. Lauren assumes that the groom has but one brother -- Nick. So once again, she decides Nick's scum. Alas, there's another brother and HE'S the hewhore, not Nick. But by now Nick's kind of like UM HELLO, TRUST ISSUES. Not to mention Nick sees Denise's ex and the ex is evil and tells Nick that he and Denise are still married. Blah, blah, blah.

In the end, after one very messed-up wedding, Nick and Lauren overcome it all, get together, and live happy ever after -- which is very cute, if not totally sappy and unbelievable.

And yet I liked it.

If you (do) think you'd like this movie, it's available on DVD.
